On Saturday, October 27th, The Men’s Club visited what is now known as Oakridge Estates. Some 80 years ago Barbara Stanwyck purchased a piece of property in the San Fernando Valley. The property bordered on the north by Devonshire Blvd, on the east by Reseda Blvd, on the south by what is now Lassen, and on the west by what is now Wilbur. On this property Ms. Stanwyck and Zeppo Marx, her agent and one of the Marx Brothers, built separate homes. Additionally, a thoroughbred training track and ranch were added. Mamanet Los Angeles and Valley Jewish Community Center (VJCC) welcomed the first Mamanet League to Los Angeles at Opening Ceremonies on Sunday, August 27th at de Toledo High School. Mamanet, established in 2005, combines sport, health and community. It is the largest social sports project in Israel that is specifically directed to mothers. Every woman, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity or economic means is invited to participate. The participants play cachibol, a variation of volleyball where the ball is caught and passed. The popularity of the program has expanded around the globe and is now part of the Los Angeles scene.
A filled to capacity crowd cheered as a Parade of Athletes made up of ten teams of mothers made their way around the gym and were introduced to the spectators. Eitan Weiss, Deputy Chief of Mission at Israeli Consulate General, tweeted “I’m humbled and honored to participate in #mamanet finals, here in #losangeles. Such a warm and loving atmosphere”. A VJCC Board member commented, “I was struck by the feeling of involvement, togetherness, loyalty and support that flowed throughout the fans and families in the crowd.”
VJCC member, supporter and Mamanet Coach, Shay Diamant, did a wonderful job as the emcee for the ceremony. He introduced the teams, coaches and Galit Peled, the woman responsible for making the league happen. Galit received a well-deserved standing ovation from the teams and the fans. She expressed thanks to all of the volunteers that assisted her in the organization of this amazing group of participants and support staff.
Ziv Sedbon, Director of the Mamanet International Professional Committee from Israel, expressed his amazement at the commitment of the teams, coaches, referees and score keepers. Shay then introduced Ofra Abramovich, Mamanet founder and Chairwoman, Jerry Wayne, VJCC Executive Director and the Mamanet LA professional Staff, Coaches and Team Captains. Ms. Abramovich expressed awe of the grandiose ceremony and wonder of the commitment and dedication of Mamanet LA. The balance of the members of the Mamanet International Professional Committee are Sean Chen Levitan, Avi Waiz, Ronit Waiz-Mamanet Media, C.E.O Galit Avshalom, Galit Peled-Mamanet L.A., and Tatjzna Frage-Mamanet Germany.
After introductions and speeches, the crowd was treated to two exciting games of cachibol with LA Mamanet participants. The fans and families went wild at the close scoring games!
Valley Jewish Community Center is proud to co-sponsor Mamanet LA. We hope that we will be able to expand the program throughout the Valley and City of Los Angeles.
