On Saturday, October 27th, The Men’s Club visited what is now known as Oakridge Estates.  Some 80 years ago Barbara Stanwyck purchased a piece of property in the San Fernando Valley.  The property bordered on the north by Devonshire Blvd, on the east by Reseda Blvd, on the south by what is now Lassen, and on the west by what is now Wilbur.  On this property Ms. Stanwyck and Zeppo Marx, her agent and one of the Marx Brothers, built separate homes.  Additionally, a thoroughbred training track and ranch were added.  During this time period, Barbara and Zeppo called this the Marwych Ranch.

The Monterey Room at the Encino was the location for the First Annual Celebration of the Valley Jewish Community Center’s Casino Fundraiser on July 11, 2015.  Over 150 in attendance were treated to a night of celebration, reminiscing, and enjoyment.

This included testing the participants’ skills at the gambling tables; trying their luck at great auction items; or bidding on items of interest at the silent auction. A magician strolled around the tables and entertained those in line for the buffet dinner.  A photo booth was set up to capture the evening, and those interested  in their fortune, a Tarot Card Reader was available.  Throughout the evening a DJ took requests for favorite songs and offered popular music tunes for dancing.

Arielle Bernard representing Councilman Bloomfield Office awarded a Recognition Certificate to Jerry Wayne who is the Director of Valley Jewish Community Center.  A plaque presented by Elaine Fox who is the Center’s Co-President, recognizing the three former Jewish Community Centers that evolved into the Valley Jewish Community Center.

A great many hours and labor of love went into the preparation and behind the scenes work by many dedicated center members to ensure that all who attended experienced a delightful evening and the smiles on their faces were reflected whether they were winning or losing at the Casino Tables. It also reflected in the pride felt by the Center members that they were able to present an outstanding social event for the community to share in their celebration of many more anniversaries to come.
